Singing Bowls are also known as ‘Himalayan bowls’ or ‘rin’ or suzu gongs in Japan, are a type of bell, specifically classified as a standing bell. Rather than hanging inverted or attached to a handle, standing bells sit with the bottom surface resting. The sides and rim of singing bowls vibrate to produce sound. Singing Bowls are widely used in cleansing & energizing crystals and other Feng Shui items. It is also an excellent tool for space clearing, meditation, centering and inducing trance states. The actual act of playing a bowl is a meditation in itself since the sound resonating from these singing bowls is pure and very powerful in centering the mind and body. Whilst playing bowls we can rise up into communion with the divine realm through entering into the mystical world of the muse of sound.
HOW TO USE A SINGING BOWL :
Sit comfortably and hold the bowl in the palm of your hand in front of you. Keep your hand as flat as possible without danger of dropping the bowl.
Take the mallet in your other hand. With a firm grip on the rubber mallet strike the bowl then ‘stir’ the outside edge of the bowl (mallet pointing downward), close to the rim. Since this is a smooth brass bowl, it may be harder to make the bowl sing by gliding the rubber mallet around the rim. Another way to use this singing bowl is by striking it like a gong/bell. Just strike the bowl using the rubber mallet. Keep striking the bowl and the sound coming from it will cleanse and purify your crystals and your surroundings.
*If you have crystal bracelets which you’d like to cleanse using a Singing Bowl, put the bracelets inside the bowl and cleanse it by following the instructions above. Usually, there are mantras/prayers uttered whenever you cleanse your crystals. The most popular is OM MANI PADME HUM. That’s the mantra of Kuan Yin, Goddess of Compassion. She’s the counterpart of Mother Mary in Roman Catholicism. You don’t not to recite the mantra if you’re not comfortable with it. The outside of the Singing Bowl is encircled with mantras which resonate when you make the bowl sing.
*You may cleanse your charms as often as you want (every other day, weekly, every two weeks), as long as you feel that there’s a need to cleanse them.
*There is really no specific time of day suggested to use your Singing Bowl as negative energies may accumulate anytime. The Singing Bowl can be used to relax oneself when exposed to stress or after a hard day’s work. It’s also used by people who meditate, like people who are into Yoga. The output may vary from one person or the other. Just sit down comfortably, then follow the instructions in making the bowl sing.
*Another important usage of the Singing Bowl is space clearing. Space clearing simply means warding off negative energies in a particular space (e.g. room, office, etc.) Just stand in the middle of the room then make the bowl sing. No specific mantras needed.
