A prayer wheel is a cylindrical wheel on a spindle made from metal, wood, stone, leather or coarse cotton. The Tibetan Prayer Wheel is widely used in Tibet and in places under the influence of Tibetan culture. In Tibet, Prayer Wheels have been made for many centuries in a wide range of sizes and styles – from hand-held and table-top wheels, all the way up to giant eight or twelve foot Prayer Wheels with diameters of five to six feet. Using the wheel is an ancient and spiritual practice. Spinning the prayer wheel is believed to transform bad luck to good luck, bless the environment, spread spiritual blessings, epromote healing, enhance compassion, as well as to help practitioners on their passage to enlightenment.
Traditionally, the mantra Om Mani Padme Hum is written in Sanskrit on the outside of the wheel, but other mantras may be used as well. Also sometimes depicted are Dakinis, Protectors and very often the 8 auspicious symbols. According to the Tibetan tradition based on the lineage texts regarding prayer wheels, spinning such a wheel will have much the same meritorious effect as orally reciting the prayers.
