The Eight Buddhist Protectors are associated with the twelve animals of the Chinese Zodiac calendar. Each deity is associated with a specific Zodiac animal and serves as the protector (guardian, patron) for all people born in that animal year. Among the eight, four guard the four cardinal directions while the other four guard the four semi-directions (the latter four are each associated with two animals, thus covering all 12 animals). It is believed if you solicit the protector related to your birth during times of obstacles, you can clear your problems faster. At many Japanese temples even today, visitors can purchase small protective amulets or carvings of their patron Buddhist-Zodiac deity.

Acala is alternatively known as Achala or Acalanatha in Sanskrit, (known in Chinese as Bu Dong Ming Wang, meaning Immovable Wisdom King). As such, he is often depicted in wrathful manifestation surrounded by flames, holding a rope and a sword. Despite his fearsome appearance, Acala’s nature is essentially one of compassion and he has vowed to be of service to all beings for eternity.
