The Eight Buddhist Protectors are associated with the twelve animals of the Chinese Zodiac calendar. Each deity is associated with a specific Zodiac animal and serves as the protector (guardian, patron) for all people born in that animal year. Among the eight, four guard the four cardinal directions while the other four guard the four semi-directions (the latter four are each associated with two animals, thus covering all 12 animals). It is believed if you solicit the protector related to your birth during times of obstacles, you can clear your problems faster. At many Japanese temples even today, visitors can purchase small protective amulets or carvings of their patron Buddhist-Zodiac deity. 

The Dog & Boar’s guardian deity is Amitabha whose miraculous energy helps eliminate disasters, lighten problems, attract good fortune and bring good health.

Amitabha (meaning boundless light and infinite life in Sanskrit) is the Buddha in the Land of Ultimate Bliss (Pure Land), in which all beings enjoy unbounded happiness. Amitabha, one of the most popular and well-known Buddha in China (where he is known as Amitofu) and other parts of Asia, Amitabha is often seen with his two attendant Bodhisattvas, Avalokitesvara, representing compassion, and Mahasthamaprapta, representing wisdom. Together they form the Three Saints of the West or the Western Trinity. Revered as “The Buddha of Infinite Light”, he manifests boundless compassion, protecting and welcoming all into his realm of certain enlightenment. As head of the Lotus family, he is often depicted seated in serene meditation on a lotus throne, his radiant form warming and pacifying the hearts of all who gaze at him. His practice purifies all delusions and removes obstacles caused by one’s excessive attachment to material things, embodiment of discriminating wisdom and antidote to desire. Under his loving attention, the Dog’s journey in life will be smoother, happier and more meaningful.

Obsidian is a very protective stone, and is excellent for removing negativity. It is also excellent protection against psychic attacks. In particular obsidian protects the gentle from abuse. It is a very grounding stone, and very healing. Obsidian is also an excellent manifestation stone. Physically it benefits the stomach, intestines, muscle tissue, and can rid one of bacterial or viral infections. It sharpens and focuses internal and external vision, and helps get in touch with buried issues before they explode. Obsidian is related to the root chakra.
