The Eight Buddhist Protectors are associated with the twelve animals of the Chinese Zodiac calendar. Each deity is associated with a specific Zodiac animal and serves as the protector (guardian, patron) for all people born in that animal year. Among the eight, four guard the four cardinal directions while the other four guard the four semi-directions (the latter four are each associated with two animals, thus covering all 12 animals). It is believed if you solicit the protector related to your birth during times of obstacles, you can clear your problems faster. At many Japanese temples even today, visitors can purchase small protective amulets or carvings of their patron Buddhist-Zodiac deity. 

The Dragon & Snake’s guardian deity is Samanthabhadra whose miraculous energy helps eliminate disasters, lighten problems, attract good fortune and bring good health.

Samantabhadra or the Bodhisattva Universal Virtue (known to the Chinese as Pu Hsien) is the personification of love, sacred activity, virtue, diligent training and patience. In the Chinese Pantheon she is seen in with Kuan Yin (Compassion) and Wen-Shu (Wisdom) as the Three Precious Bodhisattvas whose qualities make up the Buddha’s Essence. In many Japanese and Chinese temples she is also found with Wen-Shu Pusa (Manjusri) flanking Sakyamuni Buddha to form the Shakyamuni trinity. Where Mañjuśrī is associated with wisdom, Samantabhadra is associated with action. She is the patron of the Lotus Sutra and is thus often depicted seated on a white elephant holding a lotus flower or a scroll or book, a picture of serenity and benevolence, ever ready to answer the calls of those who need her assistance.

METAPHYSICAL PROPERTIES OF BLACK OBSIDIAN

Obsidian is a very protective stone, and is excellent for removing negativity. It is also excellent protection against psychic attacks. In particular obsidian protects the gentle from abuse. It is a very grounding stone, and very healing. Obsidian is also an excellent manifestation stone. Physically it benefits the stomach, intestines, muscle tissue, and can rid one of bacterial or viral infections. It sharpens and focuses internal and external vision, and helps get in touch with buried issues before they explode. Obsidian is related to the root chakra.
