The Eight Buddhist Protectors are associated with the twelve animals of the Chinese Zodiac calendar. Each deity is associated with a specific Zodiac animal and serves as the protector (guardian, patron) for all people born in that animal year. Among the eight, four guard the four cardinal directions while the other four guard the four semi-directions (the latter four are each associated with two animals, thus covering all 12 animals). It is believed if you solicit the protector related to your birth during times of obstacles, you can clear your problems faster. At many Japanese temples even today, visitors can purchase small protective amulets or carvings of their patron Buddhist-Zodiac deity. 

The Sheep & Monkey’s guardian deity is Vairocana whose miraculous energy helps eliminate disasters, lighten problems, attract good fortune and bring good health.

Vairocana (Dari Rulai in Chinese) is a celestial Buddha who is also called the “Great Illuminator” and the Supreme Buddha. Bodhisattva Vairocana whose Sanskrit name means “luminous one” or “embodiment of light” represents the all-pervading wisdom of the dharmadhatu, the absolute Buddha-nature. In depictions of the five Dhyani or Wisdom Buddhas, he is the central figure, a personification of the dharmakaya -everything, unmanifested, free of characteristics and distinctions. His all-encompassing wisdom vanquishes ignorance clears the road to enlightenment and bliss.
