The Hamsa Hand is an ancient Middle Eastern amulet symbolizing the Hand of God. In all faiths it is a protective sign. It brings it’s owner happiness, luck, health, and good fortune. The Hamsa Hand sometimes includes an Evil Eye symbol, which is thought to protect against the evil eye. It is often worn as a pendant on a necklace but also is found on key chains, house decorations, baby carriages, and other jewelry items.
The Evil Eye is a malevolent look that many cultures believe able to cause injury or misfortune for the person at whom it is directed for reasons of envy or dislike. Many cultures around the world believe that through our thoughts or through an envious glare, one person is able to cause harm to another in the form of illness, injury, or even death.
It’s believed that there are three types of evil eyes. The first are unconscious evil eyes. These harm people and things, without intending to. The second type intends to harm. The third one is unseen, hidden evil which is the most scared one. It was believed that, this eye saw all the wickedness in the world and removed poverty and ignorance. When Horus opened its eyes the world was enlightened, when he closed, it became dark. From Egypt, the eye talisman had spread to the Mediterranean, Middle East and Europe.
Talismans created to protect against the evil eye are also frequently called “evil eyes.” The bead reflects the evil intent back to the onlooker. It somewhat resembles an eye and it is said to protect the user, blue evil eyes being the most famous.
