The Eight Buddhist Protectors are associated with the twelve animals of the Chinese Zodiac calendar. Each deity is associated with a specific Zodiac animal and serves as the protector (guardian, patron) for all people born in that animal year. Among the eight, four guard the four cardinal directions while the other four guard the four semi-directions (the latter four are each associated with two animals, thus covering all 12 animals). It is believed if you solicit the protector related to your birth during times of obstacles, you can clear your problems faster. At many Japanese temples even today, visitors can purchase small protective amulets or carvings of their patron Buddhist-Zodiac deity. 

The Horse’s guardian deity is Mahasthamaprapta whose miraculous energy helps eliminate disasters, lighten problems, attract good fortune and bring good health.

Mahasthamaprapta is also known as Da Shi Zhi in Chinese. Bodhisattva Mahasthamaprapta, whose Sanskrit name means ‘he who has obtained the highest strength’; together with Avalokiteshvara are often seen flanking Amitābha as his attendants. Collectively they are referred to as The 3 Saints of the West or the Western Trinity. It is believed that Mahasthamaprapta is the peaceful manifestation of the wrathful Vajrapani who is the protector and guide of the Buddha, and rose to symbolize the Buddha’s power. A powerful protector and remover of obstacles, he represents the power of wisdom and works to bring awareness for the need to strive for awakening as a means to achieve eternal bliss.

Smoky quartz is a grounding and stabilizing stone. It brings calm and centering, lifts depression, enhances practicality, and generally removes negative energies, bringing happiness.
